Wind Lion God 

Origin

According to historical records, Kinmen was originally an island full of green forests. However, the first arrivals to the island more than a thousand years ago began to develop the land for agriculture. In addition, more than 300 years of rebellions and reckless deforestation left much of the area without vegetation. Strong winter monsoon winds blew the topsoil off. Sand dunes began to develop, creating devastating sand storms. To protect against these storms, wind lion god were built. These statues were made in a variety of styles and shapes depending on their purpose. They were placed in front of the village or set into walls. These statues provide a glimpse of the local customs and folk beliefs of the island’s early inhabitants.

風獅爺由來

金門是所屬臺灣並位於福建東南沿海的小島，由於自然環境不佳，加上歷代戰亂，天災頻傳。居民為求生活，不畏橫逆的與大自然搏鬥，形塑了本地堅毅的民風，與豐厚的宗教祭祀和內涵。 
金門民間用風獅爺來「鎮風止煞，祈祥求福」，視為村落的守護神，是金門最具特色的民間信仰，風獅爺佇立於村旁，終年忍受風吹雨打的洗禮，構成金門獨特的文化景觀。

Concept of Design

The Wind Lion God is one of my memory when I was doing my military service in Kinmen. The style of each statue within this island is totally different, and sometimes it will have special decoration because of the traditions.So I take the style of each Wind Lion God as the main theme of this poster to show the vivid color and power of Wind Lion God.Furthermore, if you fold this poster into A6 size, it would become a small zine which contain some detail informations about these Wind Lion God.Hope to enhance the visibility of some traditional Taiwanese Culture through my illustration and visual design project!

設計概念

金門當地的風獅爺是我在服役期間的重要回憶之一，位於島內各地的風獅爺造型殊異，更會因著當地風土名情而有不同造型出現。因此這次的海報就以當地各式各樣的風獅爺作為造型主體，並搭配鮮明的顏色展現風獅爺生動活力。而海報的背面沿著折線裁切後，會成為一本A6大小的小zine，內容是關於金門當地最具特色的幾隻風獅爺，分別有最大的、最小的、天下第一獅、慈母獅、雀斑、名捕等，希望透過有趣的插畫繪製與視覺傳達演繹，讓臺灣一些重要的在地特色能被國際看見！
